The woman allegedly tried to snatch the child from the shopping cart

An off-duty Ventura police officer called 911 and then intervened after seeing two men fighting over a child in the parking lot Thursday evening.

The incident ultimately led to the arrest of a 56-year-old Ventura woman who allegedly tried to grab the child from a shopping cart, Ventura Police Department officials said.

The officer was leaving a store at a shopping center in the 7800 block of Telegraph Road, near the intersection of Kimball Road, around 6 p.m., and saw a man and woman fighting over the screaming child, who was about 3 or 4 years old. The man was yelling at the woman to let go of her child as an off-duty officer called 911.

As the adults struggled, the woman kicked the man and tried to punch him but hit the child instead, according to police accounts. The man shouted that he did not know the woman and called for help.

The off-duty officer appeared between the two adults and pushed the woman away. He was later detained by officers and eventually arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, battery and attempted child endangerment.

The man and his child were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The father told police that as he was rolling the shopping cart outside, the woman approached and grabbed the child by both hands and tried to lift the child out of the cart.

The woman remained in the Todd Road Jail facility Saturday with bail set at $110,000, jail records show.

The police nabbed the alleged thief and the nearby squatter during the same call

Police responding to a burglary at a pizza shop in Simi Valley on Saturday morning also arrested an alleged squatter at a nearby vacant business.

According to the Simi Valley Police Department, a security guard initially responded to Papa John’s Pizza at 2202 Tapo St. around 5:30 a.m. after seeing a broken front window. The site is located on Santa Susana Plaza, south of Cochrane Street.

Police found a 61-year-old Simi woman inside. Authorities say he used a metal table in front of the store to break windows, then once inside threw cleaning chemicals around the store. He was found hiding in the bathroom and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

While investigating the burglary, officers saw Simi, 52, leave behind a vacant business in the same building and determined he was living illegally after entering. He was arrested on suspicion of sitting.

Officials have ultimately determined that the two incidents are not related, the department said.
