West Milton charged with manslaughter in death of 1-year-old

A West Milton man is accused of killing a one-year-old boy in December.

Nathaniel Schmidt, 24, was indicted Friday by a Montgomery County grand jury on two counts of murder, involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and child endangerment.

A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office said Schmidt was babysitting a 16-month-old boy in Dayton on Dec. 12, 2022, when she called the child’s father and reported that the boy was not breathing.

The child’s father called 911 and the child was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital where he died five days later on December 17.

NewsCenter 7 previously spoke with the child’s mother after his death, and she asked for justice for her son Ryder.

I just want what they deserve — justice, and I want justice for Ryder,” Chelsea Bare told us in December.

Schmidt was previously charged with gross sexual assault in February after sexually suggestive images were found on his phone during the investigation into Ryder’s death. According to the prosecutor’s office, the photos involved a 3-year-old.

Schmidt was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on $75,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on Friday, March 21.
