Univ. Utah to pay $5 million to parents of Chinese student killed by abusive ex-boyfriend

The University of Utah and the parents of Zhifan Dong, a 19-year-old international student from China who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend after reporting multiple domestic violence incidents, have agreed to a $5 million settlement.
The university released a statement on their website He announced the settlement on Tuesday.
The settlement includes a $5 million payment to the family and an agreement between the university and the family to erect a memorial on campus in Dong’s memory. The settlement will not include any state appropriations or student education funds.
University of Utah President Taylor Randall said the settlement “demonstrates our commitment to honoring Jifan Dong.”

Wang is currently incarcerated and awaiting trial for his murder.
A document shared by the University of Utah revealed one Report history Dong made up to university housing staff about Wang’s suicidal tendencies. Wang was charged with one count of domestic violence assault in January 2022, the same month Dong received a temporary protective order from police.
In their own statement, Zifan’s parents, Junfang Shen and Mingsheng Dong, thanked the university and expressed hope that their daughter’s case would help prevent future incidents of domestic violence on campus.
