Matanzas High School student accused of assaulting teacher’s aide He had three prior misdemeanor battery charges on his juvenile record.
Brendan J. Depa, 17, was charged with aggravated battery on a school board employee, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison, in connection with the attack on a paraprofessional at Matanzas High School. The News-Journal is naming Depper because he was charged as an adult.
Depa is being held in the Duval County Jail on $1 million bond. The Flagler County Jail has no facilities for juveniles.

According to the charging affidavit, Depa assaulted para-professional Joanne Naidich on Feb. 21. A school security video shows a man identified as Depa quickly walking up to a woman, knocking her off her feet and onto the floor. The video shows Depa beating the woman as she lay unresponsive on the floor, the affidavit said. According to the affidavit, people intervened and separated Depa from the woman. Depa later threatened to kill her, the affidavit said.
Although the affidavit states that Deppa was upset because Naidich took away his Nintendo Switch, a GoFundMe for Naydich Said he didn’t take the switch from him.
Depa will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Monday before Circuit Judge Terence Perkins.
Depp was previously charged with battery in Hillsborough County
Juvenile justice records list three misdemeanor battery charges against Deppa, all of which occurred in 2013.m The judicial circuit that covers Hillsborough County. Each charge was listed as a first-degree misdemeanor, according to records.
The first misdemeanor battery charge was for an incident that occurred on June 5, 2019, and the case was dismissed five days later, according to records.
Depa was charged with two additional misdemeanor batteries in the April 25, 2019 and March 22, 2019 incidents. Both were discontinued on May 8, 2019
The record indicates that Depp was referred to a program known as JDAP in three misdemeanor battery cases. Another notation mentions JDAP Bays.
An internet search turns up a program called Base JDAP in Tampa. Its website states that it is a juvenile diversion program for youth 17 and younger who have been charged with a misdemeanor crime. Participants in the program must be referred by the Department of Juvenile Justice and approved by the State Attorney’s Office.
The program provides services including monitoring and anger management and seeks to reduce the youth’s risk of becoming a repeat offender, according to the site.
Records also indicate that after the attack at Matanzas High School, Depa was initially charged in juvenile court with battery causing bodily harm or disability, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
