Thai woman accused of killing Michigan student extradited to US

A Thai woman who fled to Thailand after hitting a Michigan State University student with her car and leaving him for dead has been returned to the United States.

Tubtim “Su” Howson, 57, was taken by Thai authorities Suvarnabhumi Airport Wednesday night to return to Michigan, where FBI officers will be waiting to take him into custody.

Howson, who has lived and worked in Michigan with his family for more than 20 years, Fled to Thailand January 3, two days after a fatal collision that killed Benjamin Cable.

Cable, 22, was walking home along Rochester Road in Oakland County at 5:49 a.m. Jan. 1 when Howson’s 2016 white BMW 320i hit her. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.

After arriving in Thailand on January 5, Tubtim stayed in Chonburi province. He shifted to Ratchaburi province. February 10 When hit and run news made global headlines.

When Thai authorities detained Hawson last weekHe claimed he initially thought he had hit a deer.

“I didn’t think I would escape, but I was so shocked,” he said. “I tried to call the police but my hands were shaking. I couldn’t do anything.”

Howson cooperated with authorities and agreed to return to the United States to face the charges filed against him.

He currently faces several felonies, including interstate flight to avoid prosecution and failure to stop at a scene resulting in death.
