Texas police say mother stabbed by college athlete trying to escape with 3-year-old
A college athlete tried to flee with a woman’s 3-year-old son, even stabbing the woman with a screwdriver as they argued with the boy, Texas police said.
The mother told San Antonio police that her son was playing outside their apartment complex on the city’s northeast side when he saw a young woman not approaching him, according to a statement released by the department. Thursday, February 16 around 2 p.m.

“The University of the Incarnate Word is aware of an on-campus incident involving student-athlete Mairajah Rankin,” the college said in an emailed statement. “As this is an ongoing San Antonio Police Department investigation, the university will have no further comment at this time.”
Rankin grabbed the boy when his mother stepped outside and tried to run away with him in her arms, police said. The mother reached for her son but Rankin stabbed her in the arm with a screwdriver, ripping him from her grasp and running.
“I started screaming, screaming, crying,” the woman told KHOU. The commotion attracts the attention of others in the complex who came forward to helpHe told the TV station.
Rankin’s escape route was blocked by a metal fence, KHOU reported, and he was trying to squeeze the boy through a gap when witnesses caught up with him.
A nearby worker wrestled the boy from Rankin, police said in a release. He then ran to an apartment next door and was found by SAPD officers hiding in a closet.
The neighbor spoke to TV station KENS and said he wasn’t home at the time, but his wife was, and she witnessed the incident. via a security camera The unit is installed inside.
The man’s wife yelled at Rankin to leave as he grabbed several crosses and a pair of scissors from the kitchen before hunkering down in a closet, the station reported.
He was taken into custody “without incident” on charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
