Teen arrested in fatal shooting of Temple University police

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Temple University police officer Saturday, the U.S. Marshals Service in Pennsylvania announced Sunday.

Officer Christopher Fitzgerald has been charged with murder, robbery, carjacking and weapons offenses in connection with the death of a law enforcement officer, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office said Sunday.

Fitzgerald, 31, was trying to stop a carjacking Saturday night when he was shot in the head, prosecutors said.

“The officer allegedly attempted to grab Fitzgerald’s gun and reached into his pocket, as the officer lay on the ground and was fatally injured,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement Sunday.

“Peffer allegedly carjacked a car shortly after near the scene of the officer’s murder.”

His father was Joel Fitzgerald, a 17-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and former police chief of Allentown, Pa.

“Our hearts are broken tonight,” President of the temple Jason Wingard said while holding back tears, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

“It shakes everybody to the core,” said temple official Ken Kaiser.
