Springfield Police Officer, Man Shoots at Police Rescue Vehicle; in deadlock
A Springfield Police A man shot a police officer in the 700 block of South English shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, the commander said.
There were also reports, SPD Commander Sarah Pickford said, that a police rescue vehicle, or Bearcat, was also fired upon by the same person. It is unclear how many shots were fired.
Police called it a ‘standoff’.

Pickford said the initial call came to SPD as a man with a firearm, though he did not know if it was a 911 call.
Pickford said no injuries were reported.
The 44-year-old man contacted the family.
“We’re talking to family members who have talked to him,” Pickford said. He was not aware of any police history with the man and did not release his name.
At one point, the man stopped talking to the family and police fired canisters of CO gas into the home, Pickford confirmed.
Police were later heard verbally ordering the man out of the house.
Pickford confirmed a woman was in the residence, but said it was not a hostage situation. Pickford did not know the relationship between the man and the woman.
Illinois State Police, along with Sangamon County sheriff’s deputies and a Leland Grove police officer, set up a perimeter around the area.
Pickford said police are asking people to avoid the area and stay indoors. He did not think anyone else was in the residence, but “we don’t know for sure.”
Pickford said the SPD’s crisis response team was on the scene.
