Shooting at Muskingum U; One in custody
NEW CONCORD – A man is in custody after a shooting at Muskingum University Friday evening, according to Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz and a university spokeswoman.
Lutz said there was one victim, later identified by the university as a player on the visiting Olivet College baseball team, who was shot multiple times. Little information, including the victim’s condition, was immediately available, as Lutz said more information is currently being gathered.
The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. and occurred on the north turf just north of Mose Morehead Field, according to a release from the university, which activated a shelter immediately after receiving the call at 7:23 p.m.
They said that teachers, staff and students were not harmed. The shelter was lifted at 9:15 p.m. after a possible suspect was taken into custody.
Lutz said the man’s name had not been released in custody or formally ruled as a suspect, as authorities were still trying to determine a positive identification after 8 p.m.
Jennifer Shaver, Muskingum’s executive director of strategic marketing and communications, said in a press release at 11 p.m. that the victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is currently being treated.
First responders from the New Concord Police Department and Muskingum University Police assisted the Sheriff’s Office in locating the suspect based on witness descriptions.
