Rapper Nipsey Hustle’s killer Eric R. Holder Jr. sentenced to 60 years in prison
The man convicted of murdering rapper Nipsey Hassell has been sentenced to at least 60 years in prison.
Eric R. Holder, Jr. was convicted last July of first-degree murder for killing Hasley — whose real name is Ermias Asgedom — outside Hasley’s South Los Angeles clothing store in 2019.
Hassell, a Grammy-nominated artist, dies at age 33.
Two pedestrians were also hurt and injured in the incident.
Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jack sentenced Holder to 60 years to life on Wednesday.
Holder was convicted of murder and two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter after a month-long trial for shooting and wounding two bystanders.
He was not eligible for the death penalty and was widely expected to receive a life sentence.
Dressed in orange prison clothes, he did not react when his sentence was announced.
Holder’s attorney told ABC News he plans to appeal the ruling.
“It’s always going to be difficult with the high-profile circumstances surrounding the case,” said the attorney, Aaron Jansen.
Prosecutors said during the murder trial that the attack was premeditated, while Holder’s defense team argued it was a spur-of-the-moment decision.
Holder’s defense attorney said he was prompted by a conversation he had with Hassell about rumors that he was cooperating with police.
According to the Associated Press, Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney John McKinney told the court Hasle was shot at least 10 times before Holder kicked him in the head and fled the scene.
Hustle grew up in South Los Angeles, where he was a member of a Rollin’ 60s street gang as a teenager.
She opened the marathon clothing store as a way to invest in her community. Before his death, he also reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department to discuss ways to help prevent gang violence in the neighborhood.
The rapper, who won two posthumous Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Song Collaboration in 2020, has two children with actor Lauren London.
He was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Hussle’s killing sparked an outpouring of support from fans across the country who paid tribute to the rapper.
