Man charged in 2-year-old boy’s death
A Geneva man has been arrested in connection with the death of a young man under his care in September, Geneva police said.
Jarryd Bailey Meeks, 23, was charged last week with first-degree manslaughter and second-degree manslaughter, both felonies, in the Sept. 8, 2022, death of a 2-year-old boy. Lt. Matthew Colton, a detective with the Geneva Police Department, said the boy suffered internal injuries to his torso and abdomen. According to police, Meeks was allegedly alone while caring for the boy.
The boy was taken to Geneva General Hospital on Sept. 8 for treatment and transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery, Colton said. He said that the boy died of injuries that day.
The arrests came after a six-month-long investigation by Geneva police. Other agencies involved in the investigation included Ontario County Child Protective Services and the District Attorney’s Office, the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes.
Meeks is currently in custody at the Ontario County Jail. Details regarding his sentencing in Ontario County Court were not available.
