An inmate is on the loose after escaping from the minimum-security Waiwa Correctional Facility Tuesday night.

The state Department of Public Safety reported that front-gate security staff saw a man outside the facility’s perimeter fence around 10:25 a.m. and ran when told to stop. According to a DPS news release, an emergency headcount was conducted with staff reporting that 26-year-old inmate Pono Kalikini was missing.

Corrections officers searched the grounds and exterior streets of the Waiawa facility and also notified the state sheriff and the Honolulu Police Department. Officials are investigating how Kalikini managed to escape.

He is a minimum-custody inmate for third-degree distribution of dangerous drugs, the release said. His parole hearing is scheduled for December.

Kalikini is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. He has brown eyes and brown hair. To report a sighting, call 911 or the sheriff’s office at 808-586-1352.

Waiawa Correctional Facility is a work camp-style facility with dorms for sentenced men, DPS said. Inmates participate in education or substance abuse treatment programs when they are ready to transfer to the furlough program.
