WORCESTER – A former U.S. Postal Service worker was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to three years of probation with six months of confinement at his home for stealing packages of more than $90,000 in cash in Gardner.

Roberta Feliz, 34, of Fitchburg, was also ordered to pay $85,565 in restitution.

Feliz Guilty of self One count of theft of mail by an employee of the US Postal Service in April 2022.

According to the US Department of Justice, Feliz Gardner was employed as a lead sales and service associate at the Post Office. Between February and July 2020, Feliz stole more than $90,000 in cash deposits that were sent to his bank from a tractor supply company.

Feliz was seen on surveillance cameras moving envelopes from the Postal Service floor to the employee locker area or the women’s restroom.

In August 2020, law enforcement was contacted after Feliz took a control package with cash from the mail floor in an office, removed the money from the envelope and hid it in an unused desk. The prosecution asked U.S. District Judge Timothy S. Hillman for a sentence of 10 months with three years of supervised release.

Joanne M. Fund, Feliz’s attorney, requested house arrest for her client. Fund said his client clearly regretted his actions and referred to Feliz using the money for utilities and family support in the Dominican Republic.

Feliz tearfully addressed the court, apologizing to the postal service, businesses, his family and friends and the court for his crimes.

“There is no excuse for what I did. I am truly sorry,” Feliz said.

Hillman said he had a different sentence in mind before Feliz’s address, but found that his words showed sincere remorse and understanding for his actions.

“It tells me I’m not going to see you again,” Hillman said.
