March 11—Eau Claire — An Eau Claire teenager has been fined $443 for injuring two men in a recorded fight he posted on social media.

Maxwell F. Oatman, 19, recently pleaded no contest in Eau Claire County Court to a misdemeanor count of battery. A felony count of physical abuse of a child and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct and bail jumping were dismissed but considered by Judge John Thiessen at sentencing.

Oatman pleaded no contest to an unadjudicated felony count of bail jumping and an unrelated felony count of possession of a firearm by a misdemeanor.

In that case, Oatman was sentenced to three years probation and fined $961. As a condition of probation, Oatman cannot possess weapons, drink alcohol or enter taverns. He must undergo an alcohol and drug evaluation.

In either case, Oatman’s record will be expunged if he successfully completes his sentence.

According to the criminal complaint in the fight case:

Eau Claire Police officers were dispatched to a report of a fight on October 31, 2021 in the 1200 block of South Dewey Street. It was reported that 10 or more people got into the fight and some of them fled in a silver sport-utility vehicle up the hill on Harding Avenue.

A woman said Oatman was involved in a fight in which her husband was attacked. The woman said Oatman also pulled a knife on her husband’s 16-year-old brother, who was also injured.

When officers arrived at the scene, there were no suspects.

Two days later, the 16-year-old’s mother told police that Oatman had punched her son, causing a tooth to cut through his cheek. His son wasn’t sure why Oatman punched him.

His older brother, who was 16 years old, sustained a wound on the right side of his abdomen and a superficial knee wound during the battle.

The 16-year-old showed police a video of the fight that was posted on social media.

The video begins with an argument between the older brother and another in the kitchen of the South Dewey Street residence. A fight then broke out as the three men rushed towards the elder brother. The video clearly shows Oatman and the older brother punching him several times on the right side of his stomach.

The video later shows Oatman attacking the younger brother after the 16-year-old tries to block Oatman with a door.

Police interviewed Oatman at the Eau Claire County Jail on January 27, 2022.

Asked what happened on October 31, 2021, Ottman said “I can show you a video that will prove it all.”

Oatman admitted to hitting the two brothers. He said the argument started over a racial remark made by the elder brother. He said he hit the younger brother four times.

Ottman said he left the scene of the fight because he was on probation, knew the police were coming and was drunk.

At the time of the incident, Oatman was free on a signature bond for a pending misdemeanor case in Eau Claire County.
