18-year-old injured in Lee’s Summit shooting, locked down at nearby hospital
A Lee’s Summit hospital was placed on lockdown Friday night after an 18-year-old man was shot several times nearby.
A little after 10:30 pm with the officials Lee’s Summit Police Department responded to a shooting call at Northeast Douglas and Northeast Mulberry streets – just outside the St. Luke’s East Hospital campus.
Police then determined that an 18-year-old man was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle at the intersection when another vehicle pulled up next to him. The other driver then pulled out a gun and began shooting at the victim, according to a police statement.
The driver of the victim’s car was able to rush to the hospital for medical attention. The 18-year-old is now in stable condition, according to police department spokeswoman Carmen Spaeth.
St. Luke’s East was placed on temporary lockdown due to initial conflicting reports about the suspect’s whereabouts. Officers later determined, however, that the suspect had fled the scene.
Police have not released any other information about the incident, including a description of the suspect’s vehicle.
Police say it’s unclear if the suspect and victim knew each other.
St. Luke’s East did not immediately respond to The Star’s request for comment Saturday.
